There is currently NO estate tax for estates of people who pass away in the year 2010. However, most experts believe that an estate tax could be imposed by Congress later in the year and if so, could be retroactive as far back as January 1, 2010. This presentation will cover estate taxes and other questions and answers about wills, trusts, probate and estate planning for individuals, couples, and families of all orientations. LGBT Economic Empowerment Day is a full-day event consisting of expert panelists, diverse financial workshops, and a trade show. The event will bring together community members of all ages, in differing financial stages in their lives, to promote financial literacy, growth, and self-sufficiency.

• "First Act," featuring Bank, on San Francisco, Saundra Davis, and Doug Rice, will address the financial needs of low income and young community members.
• "Second Act," featuring a program on Family Economics and a discussion about where the economy is headed, will provide sessions geared toward professionals who need to develop strategies to secure their assets.

Speaker: Alma Soongi Beck, Esq. is the founding attorney of The Beck Law Group, P.C., a firm that helps individuals, couples and families navigate issues relating to estates and trusts, probate and trust administration, domestic partnership and property co-ownership, particularly as they affect unmarried and same sex couples. Since 2001, Ms. Beck has facilitated workshops on these issues for the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), Our Family Coalition (OFC), Horizons Foundation, the Asian Pacific Islander Queer Women and Transgender People’s Coalition (APIQWTC), among others. She is a volunteer attorney for the AIDS Legal Referral Panel’s will drafting section and an active board member of both OFC and the Transgender Law Center (TLC). Ms. Beck earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1998, and her B.A. in American and Ethnic Studies from Yale University. She also earned an LL.M. degree in Taxation (graduate law degree) from Golden Gate Law School in August 2004.

Some people think that estate planning is only needed when you have substantial assets, such as a house or big investment accounts. But this is not always the case. This seminar will cover some of those essentials.
